Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated India's commitment to enhancing its maritime sector during National Maritime Day celebrations. Modi emphasized the importance of modernizing port infrastructure, promoting coastal shipping, and expanding inland waterways to improve logistics efficiency and trade competitiveness. The government has been advancing initiatives such as the Sagarmala Programme, which focuses on shipbuilding, digitalization, and green shipping. These efforts aim to position India as a major player in global maritime trade, generating employment and improving regional connectivity. National Maritime Day, observed annually on April 5, commemorates the historic 1919 voyage of the SS Loyalty, marking a significant milestone in India's shipping history. The maritime sector currently handles nearly 90% of India's trade by volume, underscoring its critical role in the country's economic framework.
