Expert Witness in 3M Explosion Lawsuit Used ChatGPT to Draft Defense Report
An expert witness hired by 3M, Josh Autenrieth of Knighthawk Engineering, utilized ChatGPT to generate significant portions of his report defending the company in a lawsuit concerning a deadly explosion. During discovery, an attorney for the plaintiffs, Will Moye, identified an AI-generated 'Citation Overlay' document. This discovery led to the unearthing of 350 pages of ChatGPT conversations Autenrieth had while creating the report. The prompts used by Autenrieth, which were made public, explicitly requested ChatGPT to 'create an exceptional expert witness report defending the standard of care at 3M' and to 'show how 3M is 0% at fault for the explosion at Watson Grinding.' This incident highlights the increasing, and sometimes problematic, integration of artificial intelligence into legal proceedings, particularly in expert testimonies. The case involves multiple fatalities and hundreds of millions of dollars in potential liability.
