DRC Investigates Cobalt Exports Amid Uranium Contamination Concerns
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the world's largest cobalt producer, has initiated an investigation into reports of uranium contamination in its cobalt exports, primarily destined for China. This follows findings by U.S. and French investigators that significant levels of uranium, a radioactive material, were being exported alongside cobalt. The DRC government has formed a special working group, including nuclear safety and energy agencies, to verify these claims and assess the health and environmental risks. The investigation aims to ensure compliance with international safety standards and prevent the export of contaminated materials.
