Oprah Winfrey to Close South African Girls' School, Shift Focus to Scholarships
Oprah Winfrey has announced the closure of her South African boarding school, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, at the end of the 2027 academic year. The school, which opened in 2007 near Johannesburg, was established to provide education to girls from disadvantaged backgrounds. Current students who will not graduate by the closure date will receive full scholarships to continue their education at other institutions. Winfrey plans to redirect her efforts towards a scholarship program aimed at supporting academically talented girls across South Africa. Despite facing criticism over the years for its lavish campus and allegations of mismanagement, the school has been noted for the success of its graduates.
