Hurricane Lala Causes Power Outages and Life-Threatening Conditions in Hawaii
Hurricane Lala has brought severe weather to Hawaii, leaving 42,889 utility customers without power as of 2:14 p.m. HST on August 15, 2026. The storm, classified as a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h), has caused significant disruptions across the state. Heavy rainfall is expected, with predictions of 10 to 25 inches (25.4 to 63.5 cm) on the Big Island, 8 to 12 inches (20.3 to 30.5 cm) in eastern Maui, and 4 to 6 inches (10.2 to 15.2 cm) in western Maui. The National Hurricane Center has warned of life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in steep terrain. Winds exceeding 100 mph (161 km/h) were recorded at Maunakea Weather Center, while lower elevations experienced slower wind speeds.
