UCLA Researchers Reverse Autism-Like Symptoms in Mice Using Rapamycin
Researchers at UCLA have discovered that a single dose of rapamycin can reverse autism-like symptoms in adult mice within two hours. The study, published in Nature Communications, used a mouse model to simulate maternal inflammation during pregnancy, which is known to affect fetal brain development. The treatment with rapamycin, a drug that suppresses the mTOR signaling pathway, resulted in a rapid reset of brain activity and alleviated several autism-associated behaviors. This included reduced seizure susceptibility and improved communication among brain regions. The findings suggest that some autism symptoms may arise from brain circuits that remain adjustable in adulthood, offering new insights into potential treatment approaches.
