IMO Launches Gender Handbook to Promote Women in Maritime Sector
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has launched a new Gender Handbook on the International Day for Women in Maritime, observed on May 18. This initiative aims to advance gender equality within the maritime industry, both onshore and at sea. The event, held at the IMO Headquarters in London, featured discussions on gender mainstreaming and the challenges women face in the maritime sector. The handbook, developed by Professor Momoko Kitada of the World Maritime University, serves as a practical resource for maritime administrations, shipping companies, and training institutions to integrate gender perspectives into their operations. Despite progress, women remain underrepresented in the maritime workforce, comprising less than 20% of the onshore workforce and less than 2% of seafarers globally.
