Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Supports New TB Vaccine Development for Global Impact
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is backing the development of a new tuberculosis (TB) vaccine, collaborating with the Serum Institute of India and pharmaceutical partners in South Africa and Indonesia. The initiative aims to address the significant public health challenge posed by TB, particularly in South Africa, where the disease remains prevalent. The M72/ASO1E vaccine is currently undergoing phase three trials in several countries, including South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, and Indonesia. The Department of Health in South Africa is preparing for the potential registration and introduction of the vaccine, should the trials prove successful. This new vaccine could offer more effective protection than the existing Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, which is primarily administered to infants and young children but provides limited protection later in life.
