Indigenous Knowledge Systems Highlighted for Pandemic Health Resilience
A recent study has explored the role of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) in supporting health resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic across BRICS and SADC countries. The research highlights how traditional medicine, rooted in ethnobotany and holistic wellness paradigms, has been a primary healthcare modality in these regions. The study involved participants from Zimbabwe, South Africa, and China, who reported using various herbal remedies to improve respiratory symptoms and overall well-being. The findings emphasize the variation in institutional support for traditional medicine, with China and India integrating these practices into formal health systems, while SADC countries rely more on informal community practices.
