California Beaches Face Dangerous Surf Conditions Due to Powerful Swells
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Beach Hazards warning for California's coastline, effective until Tuesday morning. This alert is driven by a long-period southwest swell, which is producing powerful and widely spaced waves generated by distant Pacific storms. These conditions are creating significant risks, including sneaker waves and strong rip currents. The affected areas include San Francisco, the Coastal North Bay (such as Point Reyes National Seashore), the San Francisco Peninsula Coast, Northern and Southern Monterey Bay, and the Big Sur coastline. Sneaker waves are particularly hazardous due to their unpredictability, as they can surge far up the shoreline without warning, posing a threat to beachgoers and swimmers.
