Governor Newsom Signs Bill to Place Fresno County Transportation Tax on Ballot Amid Legal Threats
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Assembly Bill 1923, allowing a transportation sales tax measure to appear on the November ballot in Fresno County. This decision follows a swift legislative process led by Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria and State Senator Anna Caballero. The measure, known as the Better Roads, Safe Streets initiative, had garnered significant public support with 30,000 signatures. However, its progress was stalled by a request from Fresno County supervisors for a study, which would have missed the ballot deadline. Fresno County Supervisor Garry Bredefeld has criticized the state's intervention, claiming it violates constitutional principles and has threatened to sue. The measure aims to prevent a funding lapse for road and transit services as the current Measure C is set to expire next summer.
