Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand has proposed a policy to ban social media for children under the age of 16. This initiative is part of a broader tech safety plan aimed at enhancing parental oversight and ensuring the safety of minors online. Sand, who is also the state auditor, emphasizes the importance of children developing life skills offline, citing research that links social media use to negative mental health impacts in children. The proposal includes age verification and parental consent requirements for app downloads, inspired by Utah's 'App Store Accountability' Act. Sand's plan also seeks to protect minors' data and restrict targeted advertising.
