Researchers Develop 'Living Plastic' Capable of Self-Degradation Without Microplastics
A new type of 'living plastic' has been developed by researchers, which can break down almost completely within six days without leaving behind microplastic fragments. This innovative material incorporates dormant bacterial spores that can be activated to produce enzymes, facilitating the breakdown of the plastic. The study, published in the journal ACS Applied Polymer Materials, highlights the potential of this technology to reduce plastic pollution. The plastic is made from polycaprolactone (PCL), a biodegradable polyester, and retains the strength and structure of conventional plastics. The activation of the spores is achieved by placing the material in a warm nutrient broth, prompting the spores to produce enzymes that degrade the plastic.
