Waymo's New Orleans Expansion Delayed by Regulatory Hurdles and Safety Benchmarks
Waymo, the autonomous ride-hailing company, is facing delays in launching its driverless vehicles in New Orleans. Despite announcing its expansion to the city nearly six months ago, the company has yet to begin operations. Waymo's vehicles, equipped with advanced sensors and cameras, have been seen in New Orleans, but they are still operated by specialists rather than being fully autonomous. The company is working to meet safety benchmarks and navigate the city's unique traffic conditions, which include unreliable signals and significant potholes. Additionally, Waymo has not yet requested certification from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, a necessary step before commencing operations. The New Orleans City Council is also considering requiring Waymo to obtain a city-issued permit, similar to those required for traditional taxis and other for-hire vehicles.
