Toronto Zoo Celebrates Birth of Endangered Pygmy Hippopotamus Calf
The Toronto Zoo has announced the birth of an endangered pygmy hippopotamus calf. The birth took place on a Sunday, with the zoo revealing the news on the following Wednesday. The mother, a 20-year-old pygmy hippo named Kindia, began showing signs of labor early in the morning, and the calf was born after approximately 1.5 hours of active labor. The newborn calf, a female, attempted to stand within 15 minutes of birth and was seen nursing a few hours later. Both Kindia and her calf are reported to be doing well, resting in a space not accessible to zoo visitors. This is Kindia's third calf, and the birth is part of the zoo's efforts in conservation and maintaining healthy populations of endangered species.
