Dr. Ronald McCoy, a prominent anti-nuclear campaigner and the visionary behind the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), has passed away at the age of 96. His son, David McCoy, confirmed his death. Born in Seremban in 1930, Dr. McCoy dedicated a significant portion of his life to advocating against nuclear weapons, alongside his career as an obstetrician and gynecologist. He conceived the idea for ICAN in 2005, following a lack of progress in talks concerning the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. He proposed an international campaign, similar to the successful movement to ban landmines, suggesting the name 'International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons' with the acronym ICAN. This initiative was launched two years later and evolved into a global movement involving hundreds of organizations, playing a crucial role in the adoption of a UN treaty banning nuclear weapons in 2017, for which ICAN received the Nobel Peace Prize.
