Chicago Launches Resource Center to Support Rideshare and Taxi Drivers Amid Challenges
Chicago has introduced a new initiative aimed at supporting rideshare and taxi drivers facing various challenges, including app deactivations and immigration raids. The program, managed by the nonprofit People’s Lobby Education Institute, will provide education and training to help drivers understand their rights and navigate issues such as unfair app deactivations and wage theft. The resource center will also offer orientation materials for new drivers and connect them with immigration resources. This initiative comes as Illinois lawmakers have passed legislation allowing rideshare drivers to form unions, pending Governor JB Pritzker's signature. The city has allocated $250,000 for the program's first year, with potential extensions if funding permits.
