ScrollEd Startup Transforms Textbooks into TikTok-like Vertical Feeds Using AI

Palo Alto-based startup ScrollEd has developed an app that converts any text file, including textbooks and PDFs, into a vertical feed resembling Instagram Reels or TikTok. This innovative platform utilizes AI to generate video, audio, text, and interactive quizzes from the source material. Users can swipe up to explore new topics or swipe sideways to delve deeper into the current subject, with quizzes available at the end of in-depth sections. Co-founders Utsav Gupta and Rebecca Neff, both students at Stanford and the University of Pennsylvania respectively, bootstrapped ScrollEd after noticing their own dissatisfaction with 'doomscrolling.' The startup aims to meet the younger generation's preference for short-form, vertical content, adapting educational materials to their consumption habits. ScrollEd is participating in the TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield 200 competition.

Teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) are adjusting to a new policy that bans screen time for the youngest students and will soon impose significant restrictions on older students. The policy, passed in June, prohibits the use of district-issued devices for students from early education through first grade. For higher grade levels, caps are in place, with high school students allowed up to 90 minutes of screen time per week in each subject area. This shift requires teachers to re-evaluate and redesign lessons that have increasingly relied on laptops, tablets, and digital instructional programs. The policy was enacted following advocacy from parents who argued that students and teachers had become overly dependent on digital devices, advocating for a return to teacher-led instruction, hands-on activities, and peer interaction.
