GlaxoSmithKline Initiates Phase 3 Clinical Study for mRNA Flu Vaccine in Erie, Pennsylvania
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is launching a nationwide Phase 3 clinical study for its new mRNA flu vaccine, with Erie, Pennsylvania, serving as one of the study sites. The study aims to enroll 75 participants aged 65 and older who are in general good health. Participants will receive either the new mRNA vaccine or a high-dose traditional flu vaccine, as there is no placebo group. The first doses are expected to be administered by mid-September at AHN Primary Care — Central Erie, under the supervision of Dr. Brad Fox, the study's principal investigator. Unlike traditional vaccines that use weakened or partial viruses, mRNA vaccines deliver genetic instructions to teach the body to produce a harmless viral protein and mount an immune response. This technology allows for faster production, taking two to three months compared to six to eight months for traditional flu vaccines.
