South Carolina Faces Intensifying Drought and Wildfire Risks
South Carolina is experiencing severe drought conditions, with over 97% of the state affected, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. This situation is reminiscent of past notable droughts in 2002, 2007, 2011, and 2012. The drought has led to declining water levels in wetlands and increased stress on vegetation, particularly in areas like Berkeley County. The South Carolina Forestry Commission has issued a statewide burn ban due to the dry conditions, which are exacerbated by windy weather and low humidity. The ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including yard debris and campfires, to prevent wildfires, which are primarily caused by escaped debris burns.
