Consumer Reports Identifies Heavy Metals in Braiding Hair Products, Raising Safety Concerns
Consumer Reports has conducted an investigation into synthetic braiding hair products, revealing the presence of potentially dangerous heavy metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the majority of samples tested. The investigation included 30 different braiding hair products, encompassing human hair, plant-based hair, and synthetic options. Notably, lead was detected in 29 out of 30 products, with human hair products showing lead concentrations above Consumer Reports' level of concern. The findings have prompted Consumer Reports to contact the brands involved, some of which have responded by highlighting their own product testing or reviewing their testing procedures. The investigation aims to provide consumers with information to make safer choices when selecting braiding hair products.
