Researchers are investigating the potential of low-dose lithium as a treatment to preserve brain networks in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. A recent study published in Translational Psychiatry highlights the cognitive benefits of lithium, particularly its interaction with the cholinergic system, which is crucial for cognitive function. The study notes that individuals with Alzheimer's and mild cognitive impairment have significantly lower levels of endogenous lithium in their brains. In animal models, lithium supplementation has shown promise in reducing cognitive deficits and neuropathology associated with Alzheimer's. The researchers suggest that lithium's ability to enhance brain connectivity and inhibit cholinesterase activity could be key to its protective effects. Previous studies have shown that lithium can increase levels of glycine and choline, which are important for brain function, in red blood cells, potentially reflecting similar changes in the brain.
