China Faces Challenges in EV Battery Recycling Amidst Booming Market
China's electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing rapid growth, leading to a significant increase in batteries reaching the end of their service life. The country is facing a major waste-management challenge as the number of batteries requiring disposal or reprocessing is expected to rise sharply. Despite having a formal recycling system with certified companies, a large portion of used batteries is processed by uncertified recyclers, posing environmental and safety risks. These informal operators often undercut certified recyclers by avoiding costs associated with safe testing and pollution control, leading to improper disposal and contamination.
