Maine Man Fires Rifle Near Jewish Summer Camp, Faces Charges
A Maine man, Nathan Hewett, 36, is suspected of firing approximately 20 rounds from a .22-caliber semiautomatic rifle near Camp Modin, a Jewish summer camp in Belgrade, Maine. The incident occurred while hundreds of children, some as young as seven, were present at the camp. Following the gunfire, the camp was placed on lockdown, though no injuries were reported. Hewett was arrested and later released on bail. According to court documents, responding officers observed Hewett firing the weapon, and spent shell casings were found near the rear of the camp, suggesting shots were directed towards the basketball court. A search of Hewett's home uncovered 23 firearms, including semiautomatic weapons. Police documents also indicate a suspicion of antisemitic bias in connection with the incident. The camp is currently seeking a protection order against Hewett.
