Flooding in Homewood Prompts Viaduct Drainage Project Starting June 1
A severe storm on May 18, 2026, caused significant flooding in the Dixie Highway viaduct in Homewood, Illinois. The storm brought heavy rain, power outages, and downed trees, leading to the viaduct's closure for several hours. Homewood Public Works Director Joshua Burman confirmed the viaduct reopened between 4 and 5 p.m. To address the chronic flooding issue, a long-awaited drainage system reconstruction project will begin on June 1, 2026. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has funded the project, which includes a full 90-day closure of Dixie Highway at the viaduct starting June 8. Construction is expected to continue through October, with detour routes and public notifications planned to minimize disruption.
