Permanent Daylight Saving Time Could Shift Indiana's Winter Sunlight Hours
A proposed federal bill, the Sunshine Protection Act, aims to make daylight saving time permanent across the United States. If enacted, this change would significantly alter sunrise and sunset times during winter months. In Indianapolis, for example, the latest sunrise would shift from 8:06 a.m. to 9:06 a.m., and the earliest sunset would move from 5:20 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. (IndyStar, 2026). The legislation, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives on July 14, 2026, must still be approved by the Senate and signed into law. Advocates argue this change would eliminate the need for biannual clock adjustments, while critics raise concerns about darker mornings.
