Discovery of 'Hercules Gene' Highlights Potential for Muscle Growth and Medical Applications
A genetic mutation known as the 'Hercules gene' has been identified, which results in significant muscle growth due to a lack of myostatin, a protein that typically inhibits muscle development. This discovery was first made in mice by researchers at Johns Hopkins, who found that disabling the gene for myostatin led to muscles weighing two to three times their normal size. The phenomenon was later observed in humans, notably in a young boy in Berlin who exhibited extraordinary strength from a very young age. This genetic trait has also been noted in animals such as whippets, where it affects muscle mass and athletic performance. Recent studies, including the EMBRAZE trial, have explored the potential of myostatin blockers like apitegromab to preserve lean muscle mass during weight loss treatments.
