Researchers have discovered a genetic mutation, referred to as the 'skinny gene', that allows about one in 7,000 people to maintain a lean physique naturally. This mutation affects the FNIP1 gene, which when turned off, increases calorie burning rather than storing it. The study, published in Nature, involved genetic data from over a million people across three continents. Those with the mutation tend to have lower body fat and cholesterol, and a reduced risk of several diseases, including heart attack and stroke. The findings suggest potential for developing new drug therapies that could mimic these effects in the general population.
