New York City to Launch City-Owned Grocery Stores Offering 30% Discounts on Essentials
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the launch of city-owned grocery stores in New York City, offering a 30% discount on essential items like fresh produce, meat, and seafood. This initiative aims to tackle affordability and is the first of its kind in the U.S. The plan includes opening five stores, one in each borough, with the first set to open in the South Bronx next year. The city will provide 'grocery-ready' sites, cover rent and property taxes, and fund initial buildouts. The Economic Development Corporation will oversee the project, ensuring affordability and job quality. However, some small business owners express concern that these stores could undermine their businesses.
