Federal Government Moves to Decertify Organ-Donation Nonprofit Affecting Thousands
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is initiating the decertification process for Network for Hope, an organ-donation nonprofit based in Cincinnati and Louisville. This decision follows a comprehensive investigation that uncovered significant issues within the organization. Network for Hope, which serves approximately seven million people across Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia, was found to have serious deficiencies in nearly 30% of the cases reviewed. These included instances where patients were placed on the organ donation pathway despite having neurological signs incompatible with organ donation. One notable case involved a Kentucky overdose patient who showed signs of waking up as a transplant team prepared to recover his organs, leading to the enactment of Kentucky's Pause in Procedure law.
