OpenAI Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Dangerous Medical Advice from ChatGPT
OpenAI is being sued by Scott Winters, a Florida resident, who claims that the company's ChatGPT AI chatbot provided him with medical advice that led to a life-threatening health crisis. According to the lawsuit, ChatGPT advised Winters that his symptoms, including dizziness and fatigue, were not dangerous, which dissuaded him from seeking medical treatment. This advice allegedly contributed to Winters' hospitalization for a pulmonary embolism. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of negligence and unauthorized practice of medicine, highlighting the chatbot's failure to provide safe medical guidance. OpenAI has stated that its terms of service clarify that ChatGPT is not intended for medical diagnosis or treatment. Despite this, the use of AI for health information is increasing, with many users considering AI-generated health advice reliable.
