Community Dance Halls Experience Revival in Wyoming, Bringing Back Social Gatherings
In Wyoming, community dance halls are experiencing a resurgence, providing a venue for social gatherings in isolated areas. The Kearney Community Hall, located in the ranching community of Banner, has been revitalized by Courtney Kaplan and a group of musicians who formed a nonprofit to restore the building. Originally abandoned, the hall was reopened in 2017 after extensive renovations funded by local fundraising efforts. The hall now hosts regular square dance nights, attracting people of all ages. These events are characterized by live bluegrass music and a sense of community, reminiscent of the hall's historical role as a social hub. The revival of such dance halls is seen as a way to combat isolation in rural areas, offering a space for community interaction and cultural preservation.
