Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe Enacts Law to Prevent Divorce Delays Due to Pregnancy
Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has signed into law a bill, HB 1908, which prohibits state judges from delaying divorce proceedings when a spouse is pregnant. This legislative change modifies a state measure from the 1970s that required couples to disclose pregnancy, often resulting in delays in finalizing divorces. The bill, which passed unanimously in both the state House and Senate, aims to address the risks faced by spouses in abusive relationships. Missouri state Rep. Cecelie Williams, who sponsored the bill, highlighted that the original measure was intended to simplify child support and custody agreements but inadvertently placed spouses in dangerous situations. Governor Kehoe, who has personal experience with domestic violence in his family, emphasized the importance of the bill in preventing further harm to individuals in abusive relationships.
