Young Japanese Artists Transform School Blackboards into Creative Canvases
In Japan, high school students are turning traditional blackboards into vibrant canvases for artistic expression through the annual 'Kokuban Art Koshien' contest. This national championship, which began in 2015, invites students to create intricate chalk artworks on blackboards, a medium that offers a unique blend of creativity and impermanence. The contest, organized by Nichigaku Co., a Tokyo-based blackboard manufacturer, sees participation from about 300 high schools and junior high schools. Students collaborate to produce artworks that range from depictions of dinosaurs and manga scenes to interpretations of famous artworks like Hokusai’s Mount Fuji. The contest not only encourages artistic experimentation but also fosters teamwork among students. The artworks are judged based on photographs, as the blackboards themselves are not easily transportable. Winners of the contest are announced in November.
