Congress Introduces Bill to Study AI's Impact on Students Amid Accountability Concerns
On August 3, 2026, Representatives George Whitesides, April McClain-Delaney, and Andrea Salinas introduced the Understanding AI in the Classroom Act. This legislation directs the National Science Foundation to study the impact of artificial intelligence on students, focusing on areas such as attention spans, cognitive and social development, and over-reliance on technology. The bill comes at a time when the U.S. Department of Education has removed disparate-impact provisions from its Title VI enforcement regulations, which previously held ed-tech vendors accountable for AI tools that produced unequal outcomes for protected student groups. This change has raised concerns about the potential for AI-driven monitoring systems to disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ students and those with disabilities.
