Consumer Reports Identifies Widespread Label Inaccuracies in Prenatal Vitamins
Consumer Reports has released findings from its testing of 17 prenatal vitamin products, revealing that the majority do not accurately reflect the nutrient content stated on their labels. While no unsafe levels of contaminants were found in any of the tested vitamins, only two products—Carlyle For Her Prenatal Multi-Vitamin & Mineral Formula and Bird&Be’s Complete Prenatal Pack—met industry-accepted potency ranges for all tested nutrients. This discrepancy highlights a significant issue within the supplement industry regarding product labeling and quality control. Consumer Reports' Jessica D’Argenio Waller emphasized the urgent need for more stringent standards for supplements in the U.S., noting the absence of a clear regulatory definition for prenatal vitamins or their required nutrient composition. Despite these findings, Consumer Reports advises pregnant individuals to continue taking their prenatal vitamins, as the testing did not indicate any safety concerns that would warrant discontinuation.
