Bill Simmons, podcaster and founder of The Ringer, faced consequences after directing his daughter's boyfriend to place wagers on his behalf using his FanDuel account in Massachusetts. Simmons, a California resident where online sports betting is illegal, had his wagers voided and action taken on his account by FanDuel. The company subsequently reported the incident to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Simmons later stated he was unaware of the 'proxy rules,' which prohibit placing bets on another person's behalf. According to Eric Chaffee, a Case Western Reserve University law professor specializing in sports betting regulation, proxy betting is forbidden to prevent individuals from circumventing state-specific gambling regulations. Violations can lead to account suspension and forfeiture of winnings.
