California Attorney General Sues Calexico for Housing Law Non-Compliance
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, alongside the California Department of Housing and Community Development, has filed a writ petition against the city of Calexico for failing to comply with the state's Housing Element Law. This law mandates that cities and counties update their housing plans every eight years to meet regional housing needs. Calexico is one of five cities identified as non-compliant, having missed the deadline to adopt a compliant housing element by October 2021. The petition seeks to enforce compliance and highlights the broader issue of housing shortages in California. The Housing Element Law is crucial for planning approximately 2.5 million additional homes statewide. The failure to comply triggers the 'Builder's Remedy,' which limits local governments' ability to deny certain housing projects, particularly those with low- or moderate-income units.
