Alaska Legislature Allocates $6 Million to Juneau from Unspent Cruise Ship Tax Funds
The state of Alaska has distributed $37.5 million from its unspent cruise ship passenger tax funds to 16 communities, with Juneau receiving a $6 million allocation. This tax, originating from a citizens' initiative approved 20 years ago, collects $34.50 per passenger from cruise ships carrying more than 250 passengers. Half of this tax is shared with cruise-destination communities, including Juneau, which receives $5 per passenger. The funds are designated for projects related to port facilities and harbor infrastructure, enhancing passenger safety, and providing services to vessels and passengers. Juneau's visitor industry director, Alix Pierce, indicated that the city plans to use the funds for the Seawalk project, a significant infrastructure initiative.
