Beach Safety Advisory Issued for Evanston’s Lakefront
The City of Evanston has issued a reminder to residents and visitors about beach safety at Lake Michigan, particularly at Lighthouse Beach. Rip currents, which can occur anywhere on the Great Lakes under the right surf conditions, pose a significant danger to swimmers. These currents are not always visible and can pull even experienced swimmers away from shore at varying speeds. The city emphasizes swimming only when lifeguards are present and within designated areas marked by buoys. A color-coded flag system is in place to indicate current swimming conditions, and swimming is strictly prohibited when red flags are displayed. Additionally, water quality concerns, such as murkiness or odors, may lead to swimming restrictions or beach closures. The city provides free life jackets at its five swimming beaches during permitted hours to enhance safety.
