Indiana Governor and FEMA Address Northwest Indiana Storm Recovery
Northwest Indiana continues to recover from a devastating derecho that struck on August 11, leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Indiana Governor Mike Braun, FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton, and local officials have been actively assessing the damage and coordinating recovery efforts. Gary, Indiana, has been a focal point of these efforts, with tens of thousands of residents initially left without power, some for over two weeks. As of now, 59 residents in Gary and 159 total customers remain without power, according to NIPSCO. FEMA has established intake centers in Lake County to assist affected residents, and the Red Cross is providing shelter and support to those displaced. The disaster has prompted bipartisan cooperation at all levels of government, with a major disaster declaration approved by President Donald Trump to expedite federal assistance.
