Record-Breaking Overnight Temperatures in Florida Signal Climate Concerns
Several Gulf Coast cities in Florida, including Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota, recorded their warmest daily low temperatures on record, with overnight lows reaching 82°F (28°C). This shattered the previous record of 79°F (26°C) at each location. According to WFLA-TV chief meteorologist Jeff Berardelli, the unusually warm conditions were driven by westerly winds off a warmer-than-usual Gulf of Mexico. Berardelli highlighted that approximately two-thirds of record-warm overnight lows in the region have occurred since 2000, despite Tampa's weather records dating back to 1890. This trend, he stated, is indicative of climate change rather than coincidence. Additionally, Key West tied its all-time May temperature record multiple times last month, further underscoring the persistence of elevated temperatures across the state.
