Melbourne Airport Advocates for Border Technology Upgrades Amidst Decline in International Traffic
Melbourne Airport is calling on the Federal Government to reinvest increased passenger taxes into upgrading border technology and infrastructure. This appeal comes as the airport reports a 7.1% year-on-year decline in international passenger numbers for April, largely due to reduced services from Middle Eastern carriers amid ongoing regional conflicts. Despite this decline, international passenger numbers have increased by 3.7% for the financial year to date. The airport is investing $7.5 billion in private funds to expand its international terminal and add a third runway. CEO Lorie Argus emphasizes the need for modernizing the border experience to handle the growing passenger volumes, as the current infrastructure has not kept pace with the doubling of international passenger numbers over the past decade.
