Radio Caroline's False Announcement of King Charles' Death Breaches Broadcasting Rules
Radio Caroline, a UK community radio station, mistakenly announced the death of King Charles III during a broadcast in May 2026. The announcement, which was part of a pre-recorded obituary procedure, was aired due to a staff member's curiosity, not a technical error. This led to a temporary suspension of regular programming and the playing of the national anthem, followed by silence. The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, investigated the incident and found that the station breached broadcasting rules requiring accurate news reporting and prompt correction of errors. The staff member responsible for the error panicked and left the premises after realizing the mistake. Radio Caroline has since apologized and removed the pre-recorded files to prevent future incidents.
