Weiss Memorial Hospital Loses Illinois License, Jeopardizing Reopening Efforts
Weiss Memorial Hospital has lost its Illinois hospital license, a significant setback for its potential reopening. The Illinois Department of Public Health stated that hospital leadership failed to demonstrate necessary improvements over the past year to safely reopen the facility. Consequently, the department will not extend the hospital's provisional license, which was issued after the Uptown hospital closed approximately a year ago. Provisional licenses are granted to hospitals not in substantial compliance with state law. The state health department had requested additional information from Dr. Manoj Prasad, CEO of Resilience Healthcare, regarding improvements, repairs, and HVAC system status, but ultimately determined no major progress was made over 13 months. Prasad attributes the lack of repairs to state recoupments of funds, claiming $8.1 million due to Weiss was recouped, hindering necessary improvements.
