UN Report Highlights Energy Savings by Using Concise AI Prompts
A recent report from the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) suggests that users can significantly reduce the energy consumption of AI systems by using more concise prompts. The study indicates that eliminating unnecessary words like 'please' and 'thank you' from AI interactions could cut ChatGPT's energy use by up to 25%. This reduction could save between 87 to 98 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent to the residential electricity use of up to 760,000 people in sub-Saharan Africa. The report highlights the rapid growth in AI energy consumption, with AI currently accounting for about 20% of the energy used by data centers, a figure expected to double in the coming years.
