Tennessee Redistricting Alters Memphis Voter Representation Amidst Controversy
Tennessee's recent redistricting has significantly altered the congressional landscape, particularly affecting Memphis voters. The Republican-controlled state legislature redrew the boundaries of the 9th Congressional District, previously a majority-Black district represented by Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen. This move has divided Memphis into three separate districts, diluting the voting power of its predominantly Black population. The redistricting follows a Supreme Court decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act, allowing states to redraw districts based on partisan lines. As a result, Cohen decided not to seek re-election, citing the difficulty of representing the newly expanded district that stretches nearly to Nashville. The changes have sparked frustration among Memphis residents, who feel their political influence is being minimized.
