Oregon's New Privacy Chief Identifies Recurring Technology Challenges Across States
Michael Hanna-Butros Meyering, Oregon's recently appointed chief privacy and communications officer, has observed significant similarities in technology challenges between Oregon and his previous role in Nevada. After nearly a month in his new position, Hanna-Butros Meyering noted that many issues, particularly concerning data governance, artificial intelligence (AI), and privacy, mirror those he encountered in Nevada. He highlighted that while AI is a major focus for many entities, effective AI governance is intrinsically linked to robust data governance. His role involves navigating the intersection of these areas, focusing on how technology impacts constituent data privacy. He also noted a fragmented understanding of problems across various state agencies, where many AI-related questions are, in essence, privacy questions. Hanna-Butros Meyering aims to act as an 'arranger of people' to align privacy expectations and policies across executive branch agencies.
