Pentagon Seeks to Challenge China's Dominance in Rare Earths Market
The Pentagon is taking steps to address China's overwhelming control of the rare earths market, which is crucial for modern industrial, consumer, and military technologies. Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential for electronics, batteries, magnets, and military sensors, among other applications. Despite their geological abundance, the refining process is energy-intensive, and China currently holds a 92.1% share of global refining capacity. The U.S. government is exploring strategies to develop domestic capabilities and reduce dependency on Chinese supplies.
