Georgia Wildfires Persist Despite Recent Rainfall
Southern Georgia is currently facing two significant wildfires that have destroyed numerous homes and continue to pose a threat despite recent rainfall. The Brantley County fire, which has burned approximately 35 square miles (90 square kilometers) and destroyed over 80 homes, is now 32% contained, an improvement from 6% containment earlier. The rain over the weekend has helped firefighters by slowing the fire's progress, allowing them to expand containment lines. Meanwhile, a larger wildfire in Clinch and Echols counties has charred more than 50 square miles (130 square kilometers) near the Georgia-Florida border and is 23% contained. The fires were ignited due to the state's worst drought in two decades, making the region highly susceptible to wildfires. Forecasts predict more rain and possible thunderstorms, which could potentially ignite new fires.
